Air Abrasion

Air abrasion is a drill-less technique that works like a mini sandblaster to remove tooth decay. Ideal for children and adults who are fearful of the traditional method of extracting decay, air abrasion is best used to fill small cavities on the surface of the tooth.

During this quick, simple and relatively painless procedure, a small stream of particles composed of silica, aluminum oxide or a baking soda mixture is aimed toward the tooth surface. Utilizing compressed air, the particles literally act as a suction tube, stripping away decay. During the procedure, we will provide you with protective eye wear to prevent eye irritation. We will place a rubber sheet over the area of the mouth that is not being treated to protect the gums and teeth.

Using air abrasion, we can treat several sites during a single visit. The high-pitched whine and vibration associated with drills are a thing of the past. With air abrasion, you won’t hear any noise or feel any pressure or vibration. Best of all, air abrasion reduces the risk of chipping and leaves behind more of the healthy tooth structure.
